The preface to the 1933 Methodist Hymn Book stated 'Methodism was born in song'.
From the first Wesley hymns of 1738 straight through to today, Methodists have never
ceased to sing their faith.
The new Hymn Book 'Singing the Faith' which was published in September this year,
continues that tradition. It contains 790 hymns and songs, plus canticles and psalms.
It is a rich blend of musical styles with old traditional hymns standing alongside contemporary
worship songs. The collection crosses ecumenical and international boundaries with material
coming from the Iona and Taize communities as well as from Africa, North and South America,
Asia, New Zealand and Europe.
Included in the book are 79 hymns by Charles Wesley, and there are many more from other
traditional hymn writers. However one of the strengths of the book is the amount of new
material from modern and living authors and composers, including Geoffery flinger, who
is represented by his carol 'Born in the Night'. It is good that some of the modern hymns
embrace topics like poverty, hunger, unemployment, homelessness, greed and other
challenging everyday issues.
`Singing the Faith' is a balanced collection of classical and contemporary material which
I am sure we are going to grow to learn and love.
